How to redecorate your bedroom on a budget

I’ve been meaning to redecorate our guest bedroom for quite some time, but things always got in the way, and it has taken me three years to finally get there. I did not want to spend too much on it, but I still wanted to make it look welcoming and not just be a blank canvas.

The easiest thing to do is give it a fresh lick of paint, which I decided to do. I chose a feature wall, which I wanted to be behind the master bed (but it doesn’t have to be).

I still had a beautiful mandala stencil I bought back in the UK, which we used in our main bedroom. But we moved within two years of using it, so I decided to reuse it since I didn’t get much enjoyment out of it. You can find so many beautiful stencils, and some are very cheap, too. I bought my stencil from http://www.mandalastencils.com (I am not affiliated with them – I love their mandalas, so in case you wanted to know where I got mine from).

A blank canvas!

Once I settled on the colours, which is one of my favourite colour combinations, I went out and bought the paint. I purchased made-to-order turquoise blue wall paint, which only came to around €40 and some gold acrylic paint, which was about €17. The paint could have been much cheaper as if you buy it off the shelf, they are usually half that price, but I really wanted to match our chest of drawers which we had already painted in the colour when we were in the UK, so I had to have it made to order.

As you can see from the picture, just changing one wall makes all the difference! I could have stopped here, but I had grown so tired of the bedframe and bedside tables, which we have owned for over 20 years! I still loved them. They are solid teak and have been with us in every single home we have moved to. So I didn’t want to get rid of them. Still, I had grown tired of that dark wood, so I decided to paint it with some white chalk paint, and I think they turned out great! Chalk paint is a little more expensive than regular wood paint; mine costs around €20 per 500ml, but it does go a long way. Also, with the one I used in particular, I could skip the sanding and priming of the wood, saving me a lot of time. Again, I have no affiliations with them, but in case you want to know which brand I used, it is https://www.novecentopaint.it/

The steps to use the mandala stencil

And with just some paint, a beautiful stencil and some elbow grease, you can have a brand-new bedroom! I still have to finish buying some soft furnishings like curtains and a couple of cushions. I plan on making a couple of rugs to go by the bedside, but I still haven’t come up with an idea.

Also, a few weeks before, I had made a fabulous flower of life art using toilet paper tubes in the same colour combination, which now works perfectly with the rest of the room. You can check it out here.
